How to Find a Reliable Mason in Sri Lanka (Avoid Scams)
The #1 Headache in Construction: The "Baas".
Sri Lanka has a shortage of skilled labor. Good masons are booked for months. Bad masons are available tomorrow.
1. Daily Pay vs Contract
Daily Pay (Padiyata)
- Rate: Rs. 3,500 - 4,500/day (Mason) + food/tea.
- Problem: They drag the work to get more days.
- Best For: Small repairs.
Contract (Konavata)
- Rate: Agreed price per sq ft (e.g., Plastering Rs. 80/sq ft).
- Problem: They rush the work (poor quality) to finish fast.
- Best For: Big jobs (Walls, Plastering, Tiling).
2. The Golden Rules
- Never Pay Huge Advances: Only pay for materials. Pay labor weekly based on completed work.
- Keep 10% Retention: Hold back 10% of the payment until the job is fully done and checked (e.g., checking for hollow tiles).
- Check ID: Get a copy of the Head Mason's NIC.
- No Alcohol: Strict rule on site.
3. Where to Find Them?
- Referrals: Ask neighbors who are building.
- Hardware Stores: The local hardware shop owner knows which masons pay their bills and do good work.
